Novel psychoactive substances represent a rapidly evolving group of synthetic or modified compounds designed to mimic the effects of traditional drugs while evading regulatory control. These substances which include synthetic cannabinoids, synthetic stimulants, novel benzodiazepines and emerging opioids pose significant challenges to those who use the substances and to clinicians assessing due to variable potency, unpredictable clinical effects, and limited detection on standard toxicology screens. This webinar will provide an overview of the major categories of novel psychoactive substances, review the pharmacological and clinical presentations of these substances, and discuss practical strategies for assessment and management.
