This session provides an overview of the rapidly evolving landscape of synthetic and novelty psychoactive substances, including their chemical compositions and physiological effects. Participants will learn to identify the clinical presentation of NPD toxicity and the diagnostic challenges these “designer drugs” pose for emergency and psychiatric providers. The presentation concludes with a look at current trends in substance use and the necessary adjustments to standard detoxification and treatment protocols.
