The nationwide competency crisis has challenged the justice system, policy makers, and mental health experts to think creatively about how to meet the needs of citizens evaluated to be incompetent to stand trial. This training will provide a brief overview of some of California’s responses to this crisis, focusing on efforts to create treatment opportunities outside of the state hospital system and embedded in the local communities. The Early Access and Stabilization Services interventions, Jail Based Competency Restoration programs, Community Inpatient Facilities, outpatient competency restoration services, and Diversion programs of the California Department of State Hospitals will be reviewed including their impacts in easing the competency crisis. Future directions for further development and ongoing challenges will be addressed.
