Person-centered care has become a fundamental aspect of modern mental health care, emphasizing the importance of tailoring treatment to individual needs and preferences. The field of psychiatry faces high rates of disengagement from services and treatment, particularly around medication, among individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). Shared decision making (SDM) is a health communication model that fosters collaborative interactions between clinicians and patients, with the goal of involving individuals with SMI in decisions about their treatment and recovery. This webinar introduces SDM as a tool to enhance medication management and therapeutic alliance for individuals with SMI across outpatient and inpatient settings. Dr. Zisman-Ilani will provide background on SDM, review its evidence base in psychiatric medication decisions, present decision aids and measurement tools, and discuss challenges, achievements, and opportunities for SDM in mental health.
